I agree that Squardon is a real problem. When he came before the Stonewall Democratic Club seeking our endorsement, it became apparent in questioning that he would be an absolute disaster for nightlife. I argued vociferously against his endorsement, but sadly failed to convince the majority of the club to vote against his endorsement.

The Stonewall Democratic Club is a nation-wide political club that works to support Democratic candidates for office and also push for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) rights by working within the Democratic party. I am a board member of the New York Chapter. Our club's endorsement can be valuable for candidates running in Democratic Primaries, so we usually get a lot of interest from candidates, and this gives us an opportunity to bring forward our issues. I have long argued that nightlife is a gay rights issue because it is the life's blood of our community, and so our community should push hard on nightlife issues. (Straight people can go anywhere to meet other straight people, but for us, gay bars and nightclubs are all we have.) The club is named after the bar because of the riots that took place there in 1969. I pushed for a lot of elected officials to right letters to the Commissioner complaining about the police raids that targeted LGBT venues during pride celebrations last year. I am happy to be quoted. I applied over Facebook. I am really excited about this group. There should have been one ages ago. I am a member of the Stonewall Democratic Club board and always raised issue on nightlife when candidates seek our endorsement. In particular, I raised a huge fuss about Daniel Squadron. I am really anxious to commit time and effort to this cause. I want to be involved and should be a real asset to the group.

You're right about the connection between dancing and health. I'm not so sure about disco being the last popular American dance form. House music developed in Chicago and New York and people have been dancing to that for years and Hip hop dancing grew out of breakdancing. Maybe we already have our native dances. All we have to do now is actually get out and dance.

Maybe it would encourage people to get out and dance, drop a few pounds and get healthier...Ever notice inthe 70's Disco's everyone was thin...AMerica gave up its' claim to Disco in a harsh way and have never replaced it with anything decent...I mean Spain has Flamenco, Argentina, Tango....the US should maintain its' Disco and claim it proud, and New York is where it all began....Def we have lost something that needs to be re claimed and the large venue places are the way to go..Go out and Dance people !!!!!!

This may be counter intuitive, but I think the best way to get that initial push is to either play open mike/ turntable nights or request to play for free at venues you are interested in.

You might wind up playing on a sunday afternoon to a mostly empty room but things can get better from there. A demo will also help, but I don't know if that is better than putting yourself out there.

I completely agree. The problem with starting out, though, is where do you get those first gigs to get the momentum going? This is the piece of the 'hustle' I'm having trouble with. Most places won't book me because they haven't heard of me. I can't get exposure, though, because no one will let me play!
